Experience Relaxed Baseball in Dunedin: A Spring Training Overview

If you’re planning a trip to see the Toronto Blue Jays at spring training, Dunedin, Florida is one of the most enjoyable and relaxed baseball experiences you can have.

We originally planned our trip as a quick getaway — a little sunshine, a few games, and a break from winter — but it quickly became one of our favorite baseball trips, incorporating great baseball with a lovely beach vacation.

Here’s everything you need to know to plan your own spring training weekend in Dunedin.

Why Dunedin Is So Special

Dunedin is a charming waterfront Gulf Coast town that feels like it was made for baseball fans.

It’s smaller and quieter than many spring training destinations, which is exactly what makes it so enjoyable.

The downtown is walkable, filled with local shops, craft breweries, murals painted by local artists and great restaurants, everything feels close and easy. It is a premium walking destination featuring a paved walking trail running through downtown.

Right in the middle of it all is TD Ballpark, the Blue Jays’ spring training home.

The smaller size of the town and stadium creates a much more personal experience — you’re not just watching the game, you feel part of it.

Where to eat

The Dunedin Smokehouse – Arrive in town early and enjoy the Texas Style Brisket Sandwich and a cold apricot peach ale on the patio.

What to Expect at TD Ballpark

TD Ballpark holds about 8,000 fans, which makes it one of the more intimate stadiums you’ll visit. Expect close up action! You can hear everything:

  • the crack of the bat
  • the ball hitting the catcher’s mitt
  • the conversations between players

It’s a completely different experience from a major league stadium.

Seating Tips:

Tickets are relatively easy to get compared to regular season games

Behind the dugout is always a great option

Honestly, there’s no bad seat in the park

Atmosphere:

  • Relaxed, fun, and friendly
  • Great for both serious fans and casual visitors
  • Lots of sunshine — and not a lot of shade

Where to Stay: Clearwater Beach

There are lots of places to choose from depending on what you are looking for. We chose to stay in Clearwater Beach, about a 30-minute drive from Dunedin — and it was the perfect decision.

Clearwater Beach is a beautiful resort-style area with:

  • powdery white sand beaches
  • a lively boardwalk
  • tons of restaurants and patios

It gave us the best of both worlds:
beach vacation + baseball trip

Our Hotel: AC Hotel Clearwater Beach

We stayed at the AC Hotel Clearwater Beach, and it worked great for us. It was in a perfect location, just a short walk to the beach and the boardwalk.

  • Pool
  • Fitness Centre
  • Pet Friendly
  • Free beach chairs and towel to use

Getting Around: Transportation Tips for Dunedin & Clearwater

Clearwater Beach itself is:

  • very walkable
  • easy to explore on foot
  • full of restaurants, shops, and beach access nearby
  • Uber is a quick and effective way to get to Dunedin

You can easily spend most of your time here without needing transportation.

However, if you do want transportation, they have what is called The Clearwater Jolley Trolley. It offers a fun and unique way to explore Clearwater Beach and the coastal towns of North Pinellas.

With routes running 7 days a week, 365 days a year, you can discover various destinations and attractions in the area, such as the District in Downtown Clearwater, Dunedin, Palm Harbor, and the famous Tarpon Springs Sponge Docks.

It provides you with a convenient and enjoyable mode of transportation to experience the diverse offerings of these coastal towns.

Parking at TD Ballpark

if you do decide to drive:

  • There is parking available near the stadium
  • It can get very busy on game days
  • Arriving early is a good idea – plan ahead for game day traffic

What to Pack for Spring Training

Spring training weather can be a bit unpredictable — especially if you’re coming from Canada.

Here’s what I recommend bringing:

  • Hat, sunglasses, and sunscreen
  • Lightweight layers (mornings and evenings can be cooler)
  • Comfortable walking shoes
  • A crossbody or stadium-approved bag
  • A refillable water bottle

Bonus Sports Stop

Spring training was such a fun experience, and we ended up adding another game to the trip.

We drove into Tampa to watch the Lightning play the Calgary Flames — an awesome bonus that made the weekend even more memorable.

Pro Tips for Your Trip

  • Arrive early at TD Ballpark to explore
  • Check out their spring training shop
  • Walk around downtown Dunedin before or after the game
  • Stay in Clearwater Beach for a more complete experience
  • Plan around a weekend series if possible
  • Be prepared for sun — it gets hot quickly
  • Enjoy!!

Final Thoughts:

Spring training in Dunedin is one of those trips that feels easy, relaxed, and genuinely fun. It is not just about baseball – it is about the sunshine, the atmosphere, and the experience of slowing down and just enjoying the moments and the games in a different way.

Whether you are a life long fan or just looking for a unique getaway, this is a trip I would definitely recommend. I am sure you won’t be disappointed.
